At the southern foot of the Magrè talus cone is a vineyard known in the local German dialect as “Punggl”, which is well-known and sought-after for its winegrowing. In the mid-1950s, the owners of the Hirschprunn Estate planted a Merlot vineyard there, as it had already produced excellent results. Today, this vineyard is the cornerstone of the MCM wine. Each year, only the highest quality grapes are selectively chosen for this wine.
In 1995, the “Punggl” vineyard yielded exceptionally high-quality Merlot grapes. This harvest caught the attention of Luis von Dellemann, the head winemaker at that time. Originally, the grapes were intended for the CASÒN Rosso blend, but their quality inspired a change of plan. Dellemann decided to create a single-variety wine from these grapes, the MCM. Since its inception, the MCM has been exclusively made from Merlot grapes sourced from our oldest vineyard.
The wine underwent a rebranding in 2020, adopting the suffix “LVII” to commemorate the year 1957, in which the vineyard was established. Additionally, the term “VECCHIE VITI” was introduced to highlight the age of the vines, which are over 70 years old.
Over the past decades, the MCM Merlot has been distinctively shaped by the constantly changing climate. Each vintage tells its own story. As winemakers, our role involves adapting to the fluctuating climatic factors, refining and enhancing the wine year after year.
